8 – Intercontinental Cup, 22/10/1969
The date October 22nd, 1969 will remain etched in Milan’s history for two reasons: the victory of the first Intercontinental Cup and one of the most violent games of football: Milan-Estudiantes de la Plata.
After defeating Cruyff’s Ajax 4-1 and becoming European champions for the second time, The Rossoneri had to face the Copa Libertadores winners, Estudiantes de la Plata, in a two-legged tie for the Intercontinental Cup; a trophy lost 6 years earlier against Pelè’s Santos.
The first leg sees the win of Milan for 3-0 with a brace by Sormani and a goal by Combin, who was the unfortunate protagonist of the second leg.
Nestor Combin was born in Las Rosas, Argentina, in 1940 but a few years later he moved to France with his family, where he lately became a professional football player. For this reason and for avoiding the military service in his homeland, the striker was considered as a deserter by the Argentinian players and supporters.
The second leg didn’t take place at Estudiantes’ stadium, but in Buenos Aires in the fascinating Bombonera, which was preferred to the rival stadium Monumental, because of its atmosphere. Even before the kick-off, the Rossoneri players were given a hostile reception, with local supporters throwing hot coffee at them and with balls being kicked at the Rossoneri as they warmed up.
Estudiantes won that game 2-1, but it cannot be defined as a real game because the Rossoneri were beaten up from the first minute until the end, with fouls that cannot be part of this sport. Pierino Prati went down unconscious and then stretchered off injured after tacking a kick to the back from the home goalkeeper; Combin went down with a face full of blood due to a vicious elbow.
At the final whistle, when everything seemed to be over, the local police invaded the pitch and led Nestor Combin away for dodging his military service. The Milan squad vowed not to leave the country without their teammate and the situation was eventually resolved, thanks to the Italian diplomatic efforts, which freed the striker.
News of the farcical events spread all over the world and the Argentinian president, Juan Carlos Ongania demanded action; as a result 3 Argentinian players, Poletti, Suarez and Manera, received a 30-day jail sentence.
8 – Coppa Intercontinentale, 22/10/1969
Il 22 Ottobre 1969 rimarrà nella storia rossonera per due motivi: la vittoria della prima coppa Intercontinentale e una delle partite più violente della storia del calcio: Milan-Estudiantes de la Plata.
Dopo aver battuto 4-1 l’Ajax di Cruijff ed essersi laureato campione d’Europa, il Milan si trova di fronte i campioni della Copa Libertadores, l’Estudiantes de la Plata, in una gara andata e ritorno valevole per la coppa Intercontinentale, trofeo perso 6 anni prima contro il Santos di Pelè.
La gara d’andata finisce 3-0 per il Milan con doppietta di Sormani e gol di Combin, ma proprio quest’ultimo sarà poi lo sfortunato protagonista del match di ritorno.
Nestor Combin nacque a Las Rosas, in Argentina, nel 1940, ma pochi anni dopo si traferì con la famiglia in Francia dove diventò poi un calciatore professionista. Per questo motivo e per aver saltato il servizio militare in patria, l’attaccante venne considerato da giocatori e tifosi argentini come un disertore.
Il ritorno non si gioca nello stadio dell’Estudiantes, ma bensì a Buenos Aires nella mitica Bombonera, preferita allo stadio rivale Monumental, in quanto meno dispersivo. Ancora prima del calcio d’inizio i giocatori rossoneri vengono accolti in modo non proprio amichevole, all’entrata in campo i tifosi avversari gli versano addosso del caffè e una volta nel terreno di gioco i giocatori dell’Estudiantes li colpiscono con dei palloni.
La partita viene vinta dall’Estudiantes 2-1, ma non si può parlare di vera e propria partita in quanto i giocatori rossoneri vengono picchiati dal primo all’ultimo minuto. Non solo duri falli da gioco ma interventi che poco hanno a che fare con questo sport; Pierino Prati sviene e deve essere sostituito dopo essere stato colpito con un calcio alla schiena dal portiere di casa che aveva raggiunto il centrocampo mentre si stava battendo un calcio d’angolo; e lo stesso Combin viene colpito da alcune gomitate che lo faranno cadere al suono pieno di sangue.
Al fischio finale, quando tutto sembra finito, succede l’impensabile, dei militari prelevano Combin dal campo e lo portano in prigione con l’accusa di non aver rispettato i suoi doveri di servizio militare. La squadra non ritorna in Italia senza il compagno e la situazione si risolve solo grazie all’intervento della diplomazia italiana, che fa liberare l’attaccante.
La notizia fece il giro del mondo e il presidente argentino Juan Carlos Ongania, per rimediare alla brutta figura fatta, decise di agire, facendo incarcerare per 30 giorni 3 giocatori argentini, Poletti, Suarez e Manera.
