Where are they now? Alessandro Nesta

Four-time Serie A Defender of the Year and a four-time member of the annual UEFA Team of the Year, Nesta is considered as one of the best center-backs of all time. He joined the Rossoneri for lucrative €30 million from Lazio to join a formidable defensive line consisting of legends such as Maldini, Costacurta, Stam and Cafu.

He was successful both at the club and international level, and considered by critics to be one of his generation's greatest and most talented defenders, and of all time. Nesta was also an exceptionally agile and graceful player, with outstanding balance, ball skills, vision and passing abilities for a defender, while being a powerful and intimidating defensive, athletic and physical presence. Another trait of his was that he was fully able to take the ball out of the defense after winning back possession and start playing from the back; these abilities led him to be compared to former Milan captain Franco Baresi. With the Rossoneri, he won 2 Serie A titles, 1 Coppa Italia, 2 Supercoppa Italiana, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 1 FIFA Club World Cup in 2007 – also putting his name on the scoresheet against Boca Juniors.

As a football player, following the successful spell at AC Milan, Alessandro would go to spend 2 seasons in Canada and finally a season in India before retiring. Off the pitch, Nesta started his coaching career in the MLS with Miami, then in Serie B with Perugia and currently managing Frosinone, where he almost made it to promotion, however lost against Spezia in the playoffs.
