9 – Serie A, 23/05/1999
The 1998-1999 season is remembered with joy by Rossoneri supporters because it added to the club’s cabinet the famous “Centenary Scudetto”. The game that best represents this unexpected milestone is undoubtedly Perugia-Milan on 23 May 1999.
At the beginning of the season, Milan was the underdog because of a squad with young and unknown players and with a coach, Zaccheroni, who was sitting for the first time in an important club’s bench. Nevertheless, Il Diavolo went into the last game of the season in Perugia with a one-point lead over Lazio, overcome the week before thanks to the Aquile’s draw at the Franchi stadium in Firenze.
The game gets off with the right foot for the Rossoneri, able to score first with Guglielminpietro and then with Bierhoff; Perugia shortens the distance with Nakata scoring a penalty, at the first real goal occasion.
The second half seems to end easily with some occasions for both sides until, with a few minutes to the end, the ball gets to Perugia’s striker Bucchi who shoots. The ball seems to go straight under the crossbar, but incredibly Christian Abbiati saves it with a fantastic technical gesture. In the fans’ minds, just as memorable as the save, was the reaction of our former CEO Adriano Galliani, who celebrated in his own style and was able to put a smile on the faces of all football supporters.
Thanks to the goalkeeper who started the season as third in the coach’s hierarchy, Milan manages to win its 16th Scudetto, the Centenary Scudetto.

La stagione 1998-1999 viene ricordata con gioia dai tifosi rossoneri in quanto portò nella bacheca del club il famoso “Scudetto del Centenario”. La partita simbolo che rappresenta al meglio questo traguardo inaspettato è senza dubbio Perugia-Milan del 23 Maggio 1999.
A inizio stagione il Milan non era dato tra i favoriti per via di una rosa con molti giocatori giovani e non conosciuti e con un allenatore, Zaccheroni, che si trovava alla prima esperienza sulla panchina di un club importante. Nonostante ciò il diavolo si trova a disputare l’ultima gara di campionato a Perugia con un punto di vantaggio sulla Lazio, superata il turno prima grazie allo stop di quest’ultimi al Franchi di Firenze.
La partita inizia con il piede giusto per i rossoneri, capaci di segnare all’11’ con Guglielminpietro e al 31’ con Bierhoff; il Perugia accorcia le distanze trasformando un rigore di Nakata, alla prima vera occasione da gol.
Il secondo tempo sembra passare tranquillo, con qualche occasione per parte, fino a quando a pochi minuti dal termine il pallone arriva a Bucchi che lascia partire un tiro che sembra imparabile. Proprio quando la palla sembra entrare, Christian Abbiati con un miracolo riesce a salvare la palla diretta nel sette. Nelle menti dei tifosi rossoneri oltre a questa parata rimarrà anche la reazione dell’allora A.D. Adriano Galliani che esultando a suo modo riuscirà a strappare un sorriso a chi lo stava guardando.
Grazie al portiere che aveva iniziato la stagione come terzo nelle gerarchie dell’allenatore il Milan riesce a conquistare il suo 16° Scudetto, Lo Scudetto del Centenario.
